Image result for Muslim engagement

In many Muslim countries, we claim to celebrate engagement ceremonies with a lot of pomp and show. Khitbah is celebrated publicly and is held like a grand party in which drinks are served, music is played, huge gifts exchanged, and the couple even come in close contact with one another among a mixed gathering. All of these activities are celebrated without any guild or shame but people feel very proud on accomplishing such a party. All of these activities are in complete discord with the Sunnah in Islam and therefore it is important tat we give up the same.

What about publicizing Khitbah in Islam?

According to Islam, Khitbah should stay away from the eyes of people since there is no legal shari consequences result from publicizing it. It also does not conclude into an actual Nikah and may also lead to harmful results concerning the reputation.

Is engagement ring allowed in Islam?

The tradition in engagement among Muslim is the exchange of ring and jewellery. Such a thing violates the teachings of Islam because there is no valid reason yet for sharing any property or gifts or ornaments. Until the couple is bound with the legal contract of Nikah, all such exchange is held to be unlawful in the light of a right practicing Muslim.

All such premature acts leads to severe issues if any unfortunate thing happens and the engagement is broken before Nikah.  Furthermore, there is no basis of engagement ring in Islam nor it has been mentioned anywhere. It actually originates from one of the old Christian practices. Such  on-Muslim traditions are being copied by us without giving any second thoughts to it.

We must be able to control our desires to do what all we want. Instead, we must focus on acquiring and sharing the right knowledge which has been commanded for us to live a life of true Muslims.
