Why do we celebrate Women’s Day?

International Women’s day is celebrated on 8th March annually. Women come together to celebrate this day worldwide to rally for equal treatment and representation. The purpose of this day is to create awareness and uphold women’s achievements.

What was the theme for Women’s Day 2022?

This year the campaign for Women’s day was gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow. To call out everyone worldwide and make sure we have an environment free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. #BreakTheBias was the hashtag used worldwide to promote this.

Why do we celebrate Women’s Day?

In 1909, women’s day was celebrated in the United States of America for the first time, and it was known as National women’s day. This inspired German people at the 1910 International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, to propose a day annually to celebrate Women. During this conference, Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of “Women’s day.” This idea was met unanimously by 17 other people representing 17 different countries. 

For the first time, IWD was celebrated by Austria, Denmark, Switzerland, and Germany after this conference on 19 March 1911. Russia then observed it in 1913. 

The UN celebrated IWD in 1975 for the first time, and since then, it has been celebrated worldwide. 

How to celebrate IWD?

There are various ways to celebrate IWD:

• Educate yourself- To educate oneself about women’s rights and new policies. Being educated will make you feel empowered and strong. 
• Support brands by Women- Shopping from such brands will help these women to earn money and be independent. This will also boost their confidence. 
• Stand up for gender equality- To ensure gender equality, everyone should stand up for equal pay, programs for enhancing women’s leadership positions, flexible working schedules, etc. 
• Acknowledge women- simple words or actions would make a woman’s day. Small efforts go a long way.
