What is the meaning of Hijab?

In Islam, women and men are required to dress modestly. Islam enjoins specifically on women to cover their head with a piece of clothing called veil or Hijab in the presence of men outside of the immediate family, also known as Mahram.

What are the types of Headscarves?

  • HIJAB– Most common type of headscarf that covers the head and neck. Hijab can be worn in different colors and styles.
  • BURQA– Burqa covers everything and only eyes are visible through a mesh.
  • NIQAB– Burqa and Niqab are almost similar. Niqab covers the full body and only eyes are visible.

Why do Muslim women wear Hijab?

Hijab has always been a topic for debate, or sometimes, a discreetly avoided subject, seldom really talked about by the people around us. However, for the Muslim women who practiced the custom of Hijab, it was never even a question. However, other women and young girls who wore Hijab without knowing their importance were often confused.

To understand its importance, one should know that modesty has been part and parcel of the Islamic culture all through. Hijab encourages modesty, both physically and spiritually. When a woman covers her head as per Allah’s command, it is her way of showing her belief in Allah and accepting all his commands. It makes the connection between the Almighty and that woman stronger.

“And tell the believing women to reduce of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which appears thereof and to wrap their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, fathers, sons, husband’s sons, brothers, brother’s son, sister’s sons…” [Qur’an 24:31]

This verse in the Holy Quran tells us that Hijab is a religious obligation, and every woman faithful to Islam should cover their head. A woman who wears a hijab doesn’t show off her beauty. Allah protects a woman who covers her head at all times as Hijab acts as the Almighty’s shield from all the sinful gazes. It allows men and women to communicate correctly, eliminating lustful/dirty thoughts. By removing their veil, they would be removing Allah’s protection against evil.

For many women, wearing Hijab is a confidence booster in itself. It’s about taking pride in Islam. There is a lot of wisdom in wearing Hijab, which makes these women who cover their heads extraordinary. Apart from this, it also brings obedience to one’s face. I’ve always been fascinated by the kind of glow a woman, who wears a hijab, has! Women who cover their heads should know about its importance very well to answer questions ever asked about it.

However, Islam is a very understanding religion. There is relaxation in following Islamic norms in an emergency like visiting a doctor, filing a complaint, etc.

Bottom Line

Veil/Hijab is an integral part of Islam. Women practice wearing Hijab as it is Allah’s command to his believers. Apart from this, there are several different reasons to like veils, as it is a sign of obedience, chastity, and purity. It is Allah’s way of testing his people!
