Islam has raised the status of mothers to the highest level and serving your mother is not only an act of kindness but is also rewarded in Jannah. A mother goes through infinite struggles to give birth to a child. She not only nurses her child in her womb for nine months but takes the responsibility of the child’s upbringing on her shoulders. It is true when it is said that an expecting woman’s body can dissolve her bones to feed the fetus in her womb. Subhan Allah!

Young Muslim women who are afraid of Nikah and motherhood are missing one of the most enriching journeys of their whole lives. Being a ‘mum’ surely brings responsibility to her but it also elevates her status among the eyes of Allah (swt).  It is because of the struggles and challenges our mothers face, Allah (swt) commands us to repay them with love, kindness, respect, loyalty, warmth, and much more in return of their dedication and selflessness. The command to be good to one’s parents begins right from the Qur’an.

“Worship God and join not any partners with Him, and be kind to your parents” [Quran 4:36]

A Mother develops a great sense of attachment and love towards her children in her Period of Bearing. This period of bearing and weaning makes the mother develop a soft heart towards her every child. Everything she does through out this period is considered as Ibadah’. The pain and struggles during delivery time cannot be underestimated!

“We have commanded people to honour their parents. Their mothers bore them in hardship and delivered them in hardship. Their period of bearing and weaning is thirty months.” [Quran 46:15]

Even though a father is the provider of the family, our beloved Prophet (saw) stated that the status of a mother is 3 times above that of a father. As mentioned by our beloved prophet (saw), we should treat our mothers with in the most polite and respectful manner.

A person came to Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Who is most deserving of my fine treatment?” He (ﷺ) said, “Your mother” He again asked, ”Who next?” “Your mother”, the Prophet (ﷺ) replied again. He asked, “Who next?” He (ﷺ) said again, “Your mother” He again asked, “Then who?” Thereupon he (ﷺ) said, “Then your father.” (Riyad as-Salihin 316)

Islam emphasizes on giving special status to our mothers.

Prophet (saw) said, ‘Paradise lies at the feet of your mother.’

I came to the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I want to perform Jihad in the way of Allah. He asked, “Is your mother alive?” I replied, “Yes.” The Prophet then said: “Cling to her feet, because paradise is there.”

Clinging to your mother’s feet does not imply lying at her feet all of the time, but rather recognising where it is so you may act accordingly. Honour your mothers by serving them as they like. Serving your mother means not just providing financial security for her, but also obeying her, treating her with respect and humility, praying for her well-being in this world and in the next, speaking politely with her, and keeping her happy, among other things.

These Hadiths examples place special privileges on mothers in Islam which should not be forgotten. While loving our mothers, let us not forget to give equal respect and love to our fathers as well. They also deserve our attention and care. In today’s fleeting times, our fathers and mothers are the most trust-worthy companions we can ever have.
