Patience in Nikah

The Arabic wordصبر”, translated to patience and perseverance in English, is one of the most esteemed qualities of a believer. It is the most beneficial virtue and is loved by Allah SWT.

Our Prophet ﷺ is the most shining example of patience. He ﷺ showed the highest degree of patience in both his private and public life.

Abu Sa’id and Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Never a believer is stricken with a discomfort, an illness, an anxiety, a grief or mental worry or even the pricking of a thorn but Allah will expiate his sins on account of his patience”. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Having patience in our marriage and with our spouse forms a core part of maintaining a healthy bond. Understanding each others’ flaws and shortcomings helps us be patient and also promotes a mutual journey of betterment. Patience in Nikah also entails having Sabr and tolerance towards our in-laws and other relatives.

Our spouse, our marriage, our relatives, and our children can all be a means of trials and tests by Allah SWT, hence it befits us to show Sabrun Jameela in their regard.

Patience in Nikah can take many forms:

Nikah is a blessing to the couple and a responsibility on both spouses. We should pray to Allah to shower his blessings upon us, keep our marriage healthy and bestow on us the best patience in the most trying times.

Allah tests only the best of the believers, it is therefore a sign of Allah’s blessing and love when we are hit by calamities and trials in our lives. We will be tested in all our provisions and everything we encounter, and we should try our best to endure it with the most beautiful patience, Sabrun Jameela.

A dua (supplication) for patience:
