There is no doubt that we have been reminded multiple times in the Qur’an and Sunnah about the need and desirability of treating one’s spouse with respect and love.

Allah (S.W.T.) said:

“And live with them honorably” (Qur’an 4:19)

In another verse, Allah mentions:

“Either take them back on a  reasonable basis or set them free on a reasonable basis. But do not take them back to hurt them, and whoever does that, then he has wronged himself.” (Qur’an 2:231)

A husband must prefer to take the middle road while spending on his wife which means that he should never act like a miser nor should try to spend extravagantly.

“Let the rich man spend according to his means; and the man whose resources are restricted, let him spend according to what Allah has given him. Allah puts no burden on any person beyond what He has given him.” (Qur’an 65:7)

Although it has been stated that a man should act kindly towards his wife. In case when the wife in a  ruthless and a rude manner, he should try to discipline her in the right direction under the light of Islamic teachings. The goal should never be to control but to bring harmony in the marital relationship.

“And to those women on whose part you see ill-conduct, admonish them first, next refuse to share their beds and last beat them lightly if it is useful but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means of annoyance.” (Qur’an 4:34)

Such are the Hadiths mentioned in Qur’an to maintain peace in a marital relationship. As an ideal Muslim couple, we should strive to follow the same. Once we aim to follow, the next step should be to share the same learning with others so as to benefit our Muslim brothers and sisters.
